Watts, Alan
   b. 1915; d. 1973

   Watts was known as one of the high priests of the counterculture which burgeoned in the USA and Britain during the 1960s and early 1970s, and his writings on Zen Buddhism and Taoism were widely read by its participants. The recipient of an English public school education, by the age of twenty Watts had written and published his first book on Zen. He had already studied the Orientalists extensively and been greatly influenced by the Japanese scholar D.T.Suzuki. He left his native England for America in 1938, and although he became an Episcopal priest for a period of some five years, it was his individualistic interpretation of Zen which earned him lasting recognition.
